“Letters from Mom”
Mom wrote me hundreds of letters and would often send me greeting cards with snipped comics or articles from newspapers or magazines she thought I'd enjoy.
Mom sent me a greeting card with this note ten days before my 30th birthday.

Dear David,Thank you for listening to me the last couple of days… It’s been pretty rough, and your love and support really mean a lot.
I wish I had the courage, or the opportunity, to be with you on your birthday, but you know my heart will be with you!
It is my dearest, deepest wish that you and Jen find that path which will lead to your happiness — no matter where it takes you. I hope it takes you home sometimes, too…
What you did for your neighbor was very kind, sweet, and touching. What a remarkable man you are!
Love always,
Mom
My neighbor at the time was an elderly man who often needed help getting his garbage and recycling bins brought up his driveway. One day the woman who cared for him asked me if I’d help get him out of his bed and into his wheelchair; I can’t remember why. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but mom considered me very heroic for helping him.
