“Letters from Mom”

Mom wrote me hundreds of letters and would often send me greeting cards with snipped comics or articles from newspapers or magazines she thought I'd enjoy.

Mom wrote me this letter during my sophomore year of college. She sent news about one of my little sister’s softball games and a crazy dream she had. At the time I had a car that we named Puppy Shit, which still makes me laugh. I’ve redacted the names of some of the players on my sister’s high school softball team.

Hi, David,

Just a quick line because I’m early to work. I love you.

Last night I dreamed that you came home unexpectedly from school with about eight friends. I had gone out, and when I pulled up, Puppy Shit wasn’t in the driveway, but there were college kids everywhere inside the house. ***** was there and some guys you were driving to Jax or something. And *****’s dad was there for a while, too. Actually, it wasn’t as bad as you might think because I discovered an extra five or six rooms in the house that I didn’t know were there!

It was pretty sad that Jenny’s team lost yesterday. They got rattled when it looked like they would win – well, some of them did. ***** made her usual 3 or 4 stupid errors. And ***** had to play third because she has a sprained ankle and couldn’t move too quickly, so she made about four that were really not her fault. Together, that would account for about six runs. Ah, such is life. I think the team will be better next year. ***** will be gone, but so will *****.

I’d like to get up there soon. Actually, I’d like to get anywhere soon. Boy, do I need a vacation bit time! Maybe you and Jen could dog-sit for a weekend while I go away. Just a thought. Ah, well.

I guess I’d better go. Work awaits. I love you plus qu’hier moins que demain. (OK, so I forgot how to spell in French.) Je t’aime beaucoup.

Mom
