In June of 2002, my mother and little sister drove from Florida to Rhode Island for dad’s wedding.

Mom put together a scrapbook of photos from the trip and gave it to me as a Christmas present one year. She spent a good deal of time working on this little project; she used her computer to print captions for each photo and did her best to explain them all.

On the first page of the journal she printed “Star Trek 4 — The Journey Home” and below that, “June 2002 — Love, Mom”.

These entries show photos from that album and the captions she gave them.

Grove Avenue
June 16th, 2002 @ 10:12 am

Apparently, neither of these houses are the ones we lived in on Grove Avenue, but they look enough like them to give you a good idea. The top one was about 100 yards from the beach (not the one pictured on the previous page) and the other one was further up the road.

Rhode Island State House
June 16th, 2002 @ 10:06 am

Twelve women came together there. Four floors of huge rooms including a chapel, a terrific old stairwell, and showers that never included hot water. We prayed together every morning on the second floor and ate in the informal dining room in the basement. They tore it down and built a parking lot. …

Cousin Sophie
June 16th, 2002 @ 9:56 am

“Cousin Sophie and her daughter AnnMarie who graduated from Harvard. Sophie is incredible! She and Nana grew up together and have a lot of stories to tell.” Note: I have no idea who these people are. I assume Cousin Sophie is Nana Anna’s cousin, although I suppose she could be mom’s cousin. I desperately wish […]

Conimicut Point

Conimicut Point. Great beach. Spent a lot of time there, including some fishing with Papa. There was always great lemonade on the beach. I think this is a new truck, though (laugh).

Wyman Elementary
June 16th, 2002 @ 9:21 am

Wyman Elementary in Warwick was where I went from third to sixth grade. I loved my sixth grade teacher Mrs. Bomba. I took tap lessons there for a while. I wasn’t very happy in the playground because I always felt like the new kid, but I excelled in class and was in the accelerated program […]

Papa’s Sisters
June 16th, 2002 @ 9:14 am

The house looks almost the same. During the war, Papa sent money home to send Olga to hairdressing school, but one of her sisters stole it, and she never went. He also sent his mother and father enough money to buy the house. My grandmother was more grateful for the pillow (“mother” embroidered on it) […]
