Papa’s funeral parlor in Warwick. My room was the one to the right of the chimney you can see here. Nana and Papa slept in the front room upstairs. The house had a great wrap-around front porch, a huge garage on the left, and a chicken-hut and old-fashioned well in the back. The hall light upstairs.
Mom spent a significant amount of her childhood living in a funeral parlor, just like on the HBO television series “Six Feet Under”.
I have no idea why she thought the lamp in the hall was so important that it warranted its own photo and a comment. I wonder if it was special to her.
Apparently, neither of these houses are the ones we lived in on Grove Avenue, but they look enough like them to give you a good idea. The top one was about 100 yards from the beach (not the one pictured on the previous page) and the other one was further up the road.
Twelve women came together there. Four floors of huge rooms including a chapel, a terrific old stairwell, and showers that never included hot water. We prayed together every morning on the second floor and ate in the informal dining room in the basement. They tore it down and built a parking lot. …
“Cousin Sophie and her daughter AnnMarie who graduated from Harvard. Sophie is incredible! She and Nana grew up together and have a lot of stories to tell.”
Note: I have no idea who these people are. I assume Cousin Sophie is Nana Anna’s cousin, although I suppose she could be mom’s cousin. I desperately wish mom was here so I could ask her.
Conimicut Point. Great beach. Spent a lot of time there, including some fishing with Papa. There was always great lemonade on the beach. I think this is a new truck, though (laugh).
