Seeking a Teaching Position
September 4th, 2008 @ 7:05 pm

Here’s another letter from mom’s old hard drive. The file is inexplicably named ADT.doc. She was desperate for work after getting laid off from her position at Americorps, which she loved dearly. I have tens of letters like this to different administrators around Florida, and dozens of versions and revisions of her resume.   September […]

Taking a Chance
July 26th, 2008 @ 11:23 pm

Mom came from a time when the art of writing letters was still tremendously important, and she was a great writer. She wrote letters throughout her entire life and sent them to politicians and to business leaders, to the newspapers where she lived, to disgruntled collection agencies, to PTA members, to friends, and — of […]

Americorps
March 11th, 2008 @ 8:06 am

My mom sent me this email with the subject line “OUCH!”: Hi, Honey, I don’t suppose you have a job for me in LA. Turns out that my plans will all come to nothing since the district has decided not to renew the program. I’ll be getting to 60 this year, and finding a job […]

Plan for Saving the Program
September 2nd, 2007 @ 11:28 pm

September 2, 2007 Dear Everett, Before it gets to late to do so, I would like to propose some changes in our Member configuration for this year. We have some options, I hope, still available to us. For example, I would like to offer two full-time slots back to Volunteer Florida. (It has been […]

Strange Things
February 13th, 2007 @ 12:00 pm

2/13/07 Strange things going on at work. Chandra told me some, but Mary and Kim were reticent. It sounded as if Donna got demoted. How cruel! If it’s true, they should have at least moved her to another department. I’ve been told virtually nothing. All the others were called down to talk to Dianna […]

Americorps READS!
October 15th, 2006 @ 5:45 pm

Mom was very, very proud of the work she did for Americorps. She worked there from approximately 2002 until 2008 and I know she was thrilled to be doing something that reminded her of Camelot. Here’s a letter she wrote to prospective volunteers. On her old computer hard drive I found this file titled volunteer […]

County Service Group Helps At-Risk Children
September 1st, 2004 @ 6:00 am

The Independent Florida Alligator, the student newspaper at the University of Florida, ran an article on September 1, 2004, which quoted mom and talked about her work with Americorps. She was so very proud of the work she did there. She sent me a copy of the issue, of course.

Hello Again
June 19th, 2003 @ 10:52 am

An email mom wrote to her longtime friend and confidant, Sister Carol Mary Morrison:   From: Gagne, Kathleen To: Sister Carol Mary Morrison Subject: Hello Again Sent: June 19, 2003 1:52 PM Hi, Carol, Maybe we should be email pals! All is well except that Jen is moving to Chicago in a week and David […]

In Capital Letters
August 4th, 2002 @ 12:00 pm

I feel pretty sad today. Jen breezed in and out like a wraith and I can’t believe how much I already miss her. I won’t see her again for almost two months. God, I’m so alone! I never seem to lose weight — I can’t find enough money — and I’m so alone. But I […]
