Deeb-Paul and Shannon,
Please feed Shia Khan, Mr. PB, and Paprika twice a day using dry food and one small can of Fancy Feast, splitting it into half for Shia Khan, and approximately one-fourth each for Mr. PB and Paprika. Please be sure there is at least about ½” of dry food in the large green bowl.
Also, feel free to give them treats while you’re playing with them.
I rinse and refill the red water dish twice a day, and I leave it under the cabinet door because Paprika sometimes likes to push it around (with disastrous results). You can also put some water in the small grayish bowl in case the red one gets knocked around….
Shia Khan meds:
As always, Shia Khan gets the small piece of Norvasc in the morning in cheese.
He should not get the Prednisone before at least 7-8 hours have passed according to my vet. He will take the Prednisone wrapped in cheese.
Try to give him the Cosequin on his food. It seems as if he will take it that way.
Please let me know if you notice a significant improvement or worsening of the way he moves on his right paw. I think he’s doing a little better…
Please call me and get him to the vet if he is panting heavily or acts as if he is “out of it,” or in pain. The vet is open until 7:00 p.m. M-F and until about 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Lights, Etc.:
Please leave the front porch light on at all times. Inside the house, it probably makes sense to just leave the television on (no sound) at night. That way it’s not too bright. Please leave the front blinds closed, but open the sliding door verticals every day and close them at night.
The air conditioner needs to run at about 77 degrees, and it may fluctuate. If the house seems really warm, you can hit the down arrow on the thermostat at the end of the hallway once or twice. It should be okay most of the time. Fans are all on.
Please Call Me:
I know it’s a pain, but please at least leave me a message once a day about Shia Khan.
[phone number redacted]THANK YOU BOTH SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!
from a document named Cat Letter – D and S.doc found on mom’s old computer hard drive
On mom’s old computer hard drive I found a Word document named Northwood Oaks Letter.doc dated June 21st, 2005. I assume she gave this to her vet just before leaving to visit my sister in Chicago.

I know I talk to you a lot about coming to Florida. You always say you don’t have the time, but then you seem to plan lots of trips with [redacted] and her family.
I think it’s important that you get to Florida some time in the near future. Jen told Nana she was coming for Mother’s Day, and Nana said it would be really nice to see you, too, but that you’re probably too busy.
It’s been almost 18 months since Nana has seen you, and I would like to have you come down this way, too. Maybe the next time [redacted] comes to see her mother, you can make a point of taking a long weekend to head our way.
I love you very much, and I know you’re working hard, but a year and a half is way too long not to come in this direction.
I’ll even buy you a ticket. Just tell me when you “can” come.
I’m not mad or anything. It just doesn’t seem right that it’s been so long…
Love,
Mom
Mom sent me this email in early April of 2005. I have to assume I emailed to ask her what Nana’s phone number was and this was her reply.
At the time I thought it was odd that she signed it with “Mommy” because she almost always signed everything with “Mom”. I imagine I called her “Mommy” when I was a toddler, but I don’t remember that, of course. I wonder how old I was when I switched from thinking of her as Mommy to Mom. I wonder if she laughed about it or if it broke her heart that I was getting older. Every now and then my son calls me Dada instead of Daddy and it’s pretty jarring.

Here’s a letter mom wrote towards the end of March in 2005. She had saved it on her computer as Home Equity.doc but that’s the only information I could find about it. I’m not sure to whom she sent it or if anything came of it.
I had forgotten all about the bit about the crazy people who had moved into (and basically destroyed) our old house. I remember she told me there was something like forty pounds of putrid, rotting meat in the kitchen sink after she evicted them and rats everywhere.

To Whom It May Concern:
Regarding my bankruptcy discharged September 3, 1998:
In 1997, I purchased a new home but was unable to sell my existing home. At that time, my credit was good, and I was able to get mortgages on both homes. I found a tenant willing to do a rent-to-own agreement, and the family moved into my original property.
My son got married in August of 1997, and I had used credit cards to help with expenses even though the majority of the expense was borne by the bride’s family. Around that same time, the tenants in my rental property began to get very late on their rental payments and made two payments with checks that bounced.
After the time and expense it took to evict them, I discovered drug paraphernalia all over the house and back yard and items like handcuffs attached to faucets. As the sheriff was observing them while they moved out, they were trying to steal my refrigerator and did manage to get a washing machine loaded on their truck. This was a young family, and I was completely shocked.
I could not handle paying two mortgages plus my other bills and was soon in very deep trouble financially.
Some time in March, I lost my job of ten years when the company decided to eliminate my management level position in branches throughout Florida. It took me approximately three months to find another position that paid nearly $8,000 less than I had been making.
I was getting desperate so I discussed options with creditors and, especially, my mortgage holders. The bank was really helpful, but they saw no option but bankruptcy if I wanted to save the home I was living in.
It was an incredibly difficult time, and a very hard decision to make, but I felt that I had no choice. I had worked all my adult life, raised two children on my own with little or no child support and had managed to sustain good credit. During that period of approximately ten months, my mother had a heart attack, bypass surgery, then went into a coma, and finally was dropped in the hospital and has been in a wheel chair ever since. We were surrounded by fires and had to endure smoke in our home for almost three months.
At the end of May, I applied for bankruptcy relief. One creditor, Household Finance for Rooms to Go, asked if I would reaffirm the agreement, and I elected to do so. At the bankruptcy haring, however, the judge refused to reaffirm any accounts based on my lack of assets. Household Bank added two digits to the account number and continued to report the debt as past due until about one year ago. HRSI, an air conditioning company, wanted a reaffirmation, but the judge denied that one as well. My original home was foreclosed as part of the bankruptcy. The bankruptcy was discharged September 3, 1998.
Regarding delinquencies on my credit report:
In general, any delinquencies on my accounts were related to unusual expenses such as medical expenses. In 2001, I faced another corporate reorganization that resulted in the loss of another management position. I decided to take a month to determine what I wanted to do next, but, shortly after that 911 made a lot of employers reluctant to hire, and I went seven months without a job.
Twice in the last two years, I have had to go through batteries of very expensive medical tests, and, even with insurance, that can be a problem in a one-income household. On the other hand, I am working hard to improve my credit as much as I possibly can.
Regarding escrowed taxes and insurance:
I am paying my taxes and insurance separately from my first mortgage.
Regarding HSBC/RS:
Household Finance, as noted above, continued to report my account as delinquent for years after the bankruptcy was discharged and actually listed the account twice on my credit by added digits to the original account number. I wrote several letters of explanation regarding this and contacted them regularly, but I am not aware that they finally took it off.
The account number listed on the loan application for HSBC/RS to my knowledge is not correct. That account number belongs to HRSI which was a different account also included in the bankruptcy.
Both accounts are clearly shown on the bankruptcy papers, and, among the bankruptcy papers, there is a separate document denying the reaffirmation of the HRSI account. I do not recall any conversation directly with HRSI; however, I did sign an agreement with Household Finance. Again, both accounts were included in the bankruptcy.

Sent: Nobember 21, 2004Hi, Carol Mary,
Gosh, it’s been a long time!
Anyway, I was taking a shower the other day, and it was a little cold out. I remembered taking showers at the convent at St. Patrick’s and how FREEZING it was every day in winter. I seem to recall that the water was even cold.
It just reminded me of you and our morning prayer sessions in the second floor room.
In April, I managed to fly to Chicago to see Jen baptized into a different church, but I think she’s in a place that is pretty much like where we were at St. Pat’s and that she’s not particularly attached to a specific “religious group.” I had a great time with her, and I loved Chicago. (I had not flown in over 20 years!)
Last month, I flew to Los Angeles to spend some time with my son. Again, it was an incredible time. We did the tourist stuff, but the best part was watching the Red Sox at the ESPN lounge in Disneyland and just hanging out with my son.
Ah, well, I was thinking of you and thought I would send you a line.
Have a great Christmas, and give my love to everyone.
By the way, I’ve lost 65 pounds since you saw me last, and I’m having a ball!!!

Mom was a life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox, so the 2004 ALCS was an incredible event for her. We were on the phone together throughout the games and just gobsmacked by those Four Days in October.
At one point during the series she sent me a card with a photo of a smiling giraffe on the front over the caption “How are ya?” and this note inside:
On October 24, 2004 mom sent this letter to the Northwood Family YMCA:
Dear Membership Director,
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I must cancel my YMCA membership at this time. Please stop my direct billing as soon as possible. (I am paying $27.00 per month at this time.) Should my situation change, I will rejoin at a later date
Thank you for your assistance. Please advise me whether I will still have privileges until the end of the 45-day period it takes to cancel. I will drop off my card as soon as I receive notice from you that you have cancelled my membership.
Everyone at the YMCA has been wonderful and very supportive. I have appreciated the assistance I received every time I came there.
Cordially,
Kathie Gagne
I wonder why she quit. I remember telling her that I’d be happy to give her the $27.00/mo if she needed it. I wonder if she had fun there. I wonder if she ever went swimming — she loved to swim, and loved being in the pool with us when we were little — or did some sort of aerobics class or tried to lift weights, or what.
I wonder if she had friends at the gym, if there were people that waved to her when she went or said hi to her in the locker room.
