Prescription Update
June 18th, 2012 @ 2:30 pm

I called Nurse Ramos and asked for an updated list of the medications my mom was being administered. She told me that she was currently being given only Namenda and Zoloft, a suppository 1, and Lopressor. Nurse Ramos said that my mom had not been visited by a psychologist or a psychiatrist since Friday, and […]

A Bit of Good News
June 13th, 2012 @ 2:00 pm

I was able to talk to Nurse Karen for a few minutes this afternoon. She told me that my mom had recently been seen by Dr. Moore, a psychiatrist who was covering for Dr. Greer. Karen told me that mom was more talkative today, and that she had clearly spoken “four or five words”. That […]

What the hell?!
June 11th, 2012 @ 8:00 am

I called the Halifax Psychiatric Unit in another attempt at talking to mom. Someone answered the phone almost immediately, then when I asked to speak to my mom I was put on hold for eleven full minutes. Finally Nurse Ramos answered and we spoke for quite some time. She told me that mom had been […]

Intestinal Issues Persist
May 30th, 2012 @ 2:15 pm

I received a call from Dr. Bratu at Halifax Hospital. He said that he had prescribed mom some medication for inflammation of her bowels and colon, and that he wants to perform a thorough colonoscopy as soon as possible (maybe early next week).

News from Dr. Escander
May 24th, 2012 @ 3:12 pm

I finally was able to talk to an actual doctor this morning about mom and the news is good. I talked to Dr. Escander — not sure about the spelling there — and he was very nice and extremely helpful and kind. Here are the notes that I took from our conversation: He said that […]

An Update
May 17th, 2012 @ 8:35 am

I just sent the following email to my sister: [name redacted], I just talked to Christy, the morning shift nurse on mom’s floor. She said that there were no significant changes during the night, but that mom seems to be responding well to the antibiotics; her body temperature (which had been dangerously low) has returned […]

Update
May 2nd, 2012 @ 6:20 pm

An update from my little sister, sent from Halifax: Hey, David. […] Dr. Buck said that medically speaking, Mom’s physical condition is not critical enough that it warrants continuing to be in the hospital. Mom will need to go to a nursing home next. My thoughts are that I can get things in place for […]

To consider…
April 28th, 2012 @ 12:46 pm

Here’s an email I just received from my sister: I think I told you that they took Mom off of the Cymbalta the other night. I have not heard from Jan yet, but I think she may have already visited Mom today. I can’t imagine that if she saw Mom as she has been since […]

This Is Madness
April 27th, 2012 @ 3:19 pm

My sister just sent me this very disturbing email: I told Dr Moore no Haldol. He is taking Mom off Cymbalta. Her behavior has been off the chain the last couple of days-constant crying, starting some hallucination type comments, and a slew of the other side effects the Cymbalta ads say “notify your Dr right […]

Stuck in the 1960s
April 27th, 2012 @ 2:58 pm

Here is the email I just sent to my sister: [name redacted], Under no circumstances should mom be administered ECT. She shouldn’t be taking Haldol, either. Is Halifax hospital stuck in the 1960s or something? This is ridiculous. Wikipedia says, “[haldol] is by far more active against ‘positive’ psychotic symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, etc.) than against […]
